How to Protect Your Pool From Bad Weather

Whether you have an above-ground or inground pool, you want it protected from damage caused by bad weather. Most pools are strong enough to endure high winds, but the debris that enters the pool water during a storm can puncture a liner, resulting in a costly repair. Winterizing a pool before the first freeze helps to avoid damaging the pool pump and lines. When water freezes, it expands, cracking the pipes and pump. Most pipes are made from plastic and crack easily from the pressure.

  1. First: Pool cover protection

Cover an inground or above-ground pool with a pool cover when not in use. A solar cover works just as well as a pool cover. Pull the cover so it sits against the pool walls. The pool cover keeps debris from falling into the pool water, which could poke a hole into the liner. Large holes may require the liner to be replaced. The cover also helps keep pool water and chemicals from evaporating too quickly.

  2. Second: Winterize a pool

Empty the pool of water at least halfway down with a garden hose. Do not empty the pool completely. Drain the pump and the lines of all water to keep them from freezing. Cover the pool with a winter pool cover. If you have an above-ground pool, file a long rope through the holes around the edge of the pool cover to pull it tight. Leave the cover on the pool all winter until ready to open the pool for the next season.
